In response to the devastating monsoon rains that have swept through Balochistan in 2024, Peace by Youth (PY), in collaboration with local and international partners, has launched a comprehensive emergency relief operation. The severe flooding, resulting from the relentless downpour, has taken a heavy toll on the region, causing widespread destruction and leaving tens of thousands in dire need of assistance. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the catastrophe has tragically claimed 29 lives, including 13 children, while injuring 15 individuals, of which 11 are children.

The monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across the province:

• Homes Destroyed: 866 houses have been completely destroyed, while another 13,986 have been partially damaged, displacing thousands of families.
• Agricultural Damage: Over 58,799 acres of crops have been wiped out, threatening the food security and livelihoods of many rural communities.
• Infrastructure Impact: 41 kilometers of roads, 7 bridges, and 4 healthcare units have been damaged, further isolating affected areas and hindering access to essential services.
• Livestock Losses: The loss of 373 animals has severely affected livelihoods dependent on agriculture and animal husbandry.

The flooding has affected a staggering 109,903 people, primarily in the agrarian districts of Sohbatpur, Naseerabad, and Jafferabad, where the disaster has destroyed homes, crops, and essential infrastructure, cutting off access to critical resources like clean water, food, and medical care. Many communities remain inaccessible due to the destruction of roads and bridges, leaving families vulnerable to disease outbreaks and starvation.

Peace by Youth’s Response

Peace by Youth (PY), together with NEEDS Balochistan and other partners, has conducted Rapid Need Assessments (RNA) in the most severely impacted districts, including Sohbatpur and Naseerabad​. These assessments provide critical insights into the extent of the damage and help prioritize the needs of affected communities. Immediate needs identified include shelter, food, clean drinking water, healthcare, and protection services for vulnerable groups such as women, children, and persons with disabilities.

Key Findings:

1. Shelter: Thousands of families are without homes, requiring immediate provision of tents, tarpaulins, and other emergency shelter materials.
2. Food and Water: Flooding has contaminated water sources and destroyed crops, resulting in food shortages and lack of access to clean drinking water.
3. Health: There is an urgent need to address the outbreak of diseases such as diarrhea and malaria, exacerbated by poor sanitation and stagnant water. Mobile health teams and medical supplies are critical for preventing further health crises​.
4. Infrastructure: The destruction of roads, bridges, and electricity networks has made it challenging to deliver aid, further isolating affected communities.
