What healthy relationships include

  • Mutual respect and honest communication
  • Freedom to have friends, interests and opinions
  • Consent that is voluntary, informed and can be withdrawn
  • Boundaries that are discussed and respected
  • Disagreement without threats, humiliation or violence

Warning signs

Concern is warranted when someone controls contact with family or friends, demands passwords, tracks movements, pressures sexual activity, threatens self-harm to control another person, humiliates them, controls money or uses physical violence.

Communicating a boundary

Use clear language: “I am not comfortable with that,” “Do not share my information,” or “I need time before I answer.” A boundary does not require a long justification.

When it may be unsafe to confront someone

If there are threats, violence, stalking or coercion, prioritize a safety plan and specialist support rather than meeting alone. Keep evidence and involve a trusted adult or appropriate service.
