Field story
Peace by Youth (PY), in collaboration with Community Development Foundation (CDF), is conducting a series of community-based training activities in District Jacobabad, Sindh, aimed at strengthening practical skills, improving household knowledge and supporting the resilience of vulnerable communities. The integrated training initiative brings together four key areas of learning: Digital and Market Skills (DMS), Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) and Water-Efficient Practices, Kitchen Gardening and Household Nutrition (KG), and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). These training activities respond to interconnected challenges affecting local communities, including extreme heat, water scarcity, agricultural vulnerability, household food and nutrition needs, hygiene-related risks and limited livelihood opportunities for young people. Climate-Smart Agriculture and Water-Efficient Practices Through its Climate-Smart Agriculture training, PY is promoting practical approaches to help farming households adapt to changing climatic conditions and manage natural resources more efficiently. The training covers climate-resilient crop production, soil health, water-efficient farming techniques, integrated pest and disease management, livelihood diversification and agricultural risk preparedness. Participants explore ways to improve farming practices while considering the realities of heat stress, irregular rainfall, drought and water constraints in Jacobabad. The sessions emphasise practical knowledge that farmers can adapt to their local conditions to support agricultural productivity and strengthen resilience. Kitchen Gardening and Household Nutrition The Kitchen Gardening and Household Nutrition training focuses on encouraging household-level vegetable production and improving awareness of dietary diversity. Participants learn about suitable gardening spaces, crop selection, seasonal planning, planting and crop care, composting, efficient water use, harvesting and garden maintenance. The training also highlights the relationship between household food production, nutrition awareness and family wellbeing. By introducing practical gardening methods that can be adapted to available household space and resources, the initiative aims to help women and families explore opportunities to grow fresh vegetables and support more diverse diets. Water Storage and Good Hygiene Practices Under the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene training component, PY is strengthening knowledge of safe water handling, household water storage, hygiene promotion and community awareness. The Training of Trainers (ToT) approach is designed to prepare participants to communicate essential health and hygiene messages and facilitate learning within their communities. Key learning areas include preventing water contamination, safe collection and transportation of drinking water, maintaining clean and covered storage containers, household water treatment, handwashing, personal and environmental hygiene, food safety and community hygiene planning. The programme also incorporates nutrition awareness and participatory communication methods, helping trainers connect safe water and hygiene practices with everyday household wellbeing. Digital and Market Skills for Youth Recognising the importance of practical livelihood skills for young people, PY is also conducting training in Digital and Market Skills for youth from vulnerable households. This component focuses on helping participants understand how digital tools, market knowledge and basic enterprise planning can support livelihood development. Training topics include digital and e-commerce skills, market systems and value chain development, business development and enterprise planning, and digital marketing and online business promotion. Participants explore how smartphones and accessible digital platforms can be used to present products and services, communicate with customers, identify market opportunities and support small business activities. The training aims to strengthen participants' understanding of the steps involved in turning skills and ideas into potential income-generating opportunities. Practical, Participatory and Locally Relevant Learning Across the four training areas, PY's approach combines structured learning sessions with practical demonstrations, group discussions, local examples, participatory exercises and skills development. The training materials are designed to support facilitators and participants with relevant information and practical guidance that can be applied beyond the training environment. The wider training assignment is planned for implementation in Jacobabad during July–November 2026, in coordination with CDF. The programme includes dedicated learning materials for the different training tracks, along with provisions for attendance documentation, learning assessments, training monitoring and reporting. By connecting agricultural resilience, household nutrition, hygiene promotion and youth livelihood skills within one coordinated training package, the initiative recognises that sustainable community development requires attention to several interconnected needs. Building Knowledge, Skills and Community Resilience Through these activities, Peace by Youth aims to support communities in developing practical knowledge and skills that are relevant to their daily lives and local challenges. Climate-smart farming practices can help farmers consider more resilient production methods; kitchen gardening can encourage household food diversity; safe water and hygiene education can promote healthier daily practices; and digital and market skills can help young people explore new livelihood pathways. The initiative reflects PY's commitment to community-based capacity development, youth empowerment and practical learning. Through continued coordination with CDF, the organisation seeks to strengthen the foundations for more resilient households and better-informed communities in Jacobabad. Implementation progress, verified participation figures and documented training outcomes will be communicated as monitoring and reporting information becomes available.
